Working Together

Helping Parents Build Meaningful Connections with Their Neurodiverse Child

Navigating the world with a neurodiverse child can be both rewarding and challenging. As a speech and language therapist, I am here to guide you in fostering true communication—a genuine meeting of minds—so that real conversations and deeper relationships can grow. My aim is to support your child in becoming the happiest, most confident version of their wonderfully unique self.

Before connection can flourish, emotional regulation must be in place. However, achieving this can sometimes feel overwhelming. Many parents struggle to interpret their child’s behaviours and are unsure how best to respond. Understanding what lies beneath these behaviours is key, and together, we can explore practical ways to help your child thrive.

How I Can Support You:

  • Connection First: Strengthen your child’s ability to express emotions and needs, reducing anxiety, frustration, and physical reactions like hitting, kicking, and biting by promoting safe emotional regulation.
  • Observe and Adapt: Develop strategies to ease communication breakdowns that can lead to overwhelming dysregulation, especially during unexpected changes or transitions.
  • Natural Routines: Guide you in supporting your child’s language and social interactions throughout the day, helping them feel more secure and understood.
  • Neurodiversity-Affirming Practice: Address daily communication challenges related to routines like getting dressed, leaving the house, bedtime, and bath time to foster connection and collaboration, reducing stress.
  • Empowered Caregivers: Equip you with communication techniques to stay calm and responsive in difficult moments, creating a more positive and connected parent-child relationship.
  • Communication as an Outcome of Regulation: Help your child navigate big emotions, social hesitancy, and anxiety by building confidence in their ability to connect and communicate with others, making them feel seen, heard, and valued.
  • Togetherness: Work collaboratively to create a supportive environment that embraces your child’s unique strengths and challenges, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual understanding.

By integrating the CONNECT Framework into our sessions, we can create a tailored approach that respects and builds upon your child’s individuality, promoting meaningful progress in their communication and overall well-being.
